Question
QUESTION: Hello, I was wondering if you could please give me some advice about a fussy 11 week old chihuahua. He refuses to eat his special puppy food, but he is hungry (which is proven when he is offered things like plain chicken, ham etc). I am really worried about hypoglocimia if he doesnt eat, but I don't want him missing out on his vitamins and special puppy needs that are in the puppy food. I hope you can help me with some ideas... thanks

ANSWER: Hi Nia - you can feed him some home made chicken and a little bit of dog food.  You will need to give some vitamins and supplements.
Let me know what country you are in and I will refer you to a few vitamins and food brands.

ANSWER: Ok, I would make some good fresh chicken and cook that up - Place into freezer bags and take out what you need each day.
YOU could cook up 1 weeks worth of chicken and freeze it.
also, add some cooked Yams or Squash....YOU can cook this and place into plastic or glass containers.  It will last at least a week in the refrigerator with a good air tight seal.

Go to your local pet store and see if they sell a good Powdered doggie vitamin.  ( look for something that is natural with VERY little sugar added) ....I would add a small amount of this each day to the squash or yams.  YOU can also offer green beans with a little bit of parmesan cheese on top.

Good Luck

Intro to the group:

Unfortunately, most veterinary schools provide inadequate education on basic canine and feline nutrition.
Nutrition may occupy as little as a one week long seminar in their many years of education to become veterinarians.
For answers to nutrition they look to pet food manufacturers, which readily supply them with specialty, preventative diets for all life stages and ailments. Such an example is the Science Diet / Hill's Brand.
