Three year old male Chihuahua and a new puppy

Question
I have a 3 year old male Chi, when we got him the Humane Society said that he had to be an only dog home he is very attached to us and he is my baby his feeling are very important to me. we have watched other dogs for friends in the past and he has been just fine, shy at first but playful with them. A week ago we got a 5 month old Chi puppy and our older dog for the first day was  throwing up with foam and he really hasn't eaten that much. He wont sit next to me either and all he does is shake while the puppy is around. Is there anything I can do or should I try to find a home for this puppy?

thank you

Answer
Hi Nicole...

Have you had your male Chi for the whole three years?  How long ago did you adopt him from the humane society?  Did the Humane Society specify why he had to be placed in a home as the only dog?  It's hard to say, as I'm not there to observe him, but one would think that the reaction he's having may be why the Humane Society wanted to place him in a home with no other dogs.

It concerns me greatly that he's throwing up and that he won't eat much.  Generally, when dogs throw up yellow, foamy stuff, that's due to not eating enough.  It's important that he remain hydrated and that he eat, even if that means several small meals through out the day.

What also concerns me is that you say that he's been okay with other dogs when you watched them at your house in the past and didn't react like he is now.  I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you that you should have him evaluated by a qualified veterinarian as it could be a coincidence that he suddenly started vomiting and becoming inappetant once you got the pup.  Perhaps he has a medical condition that worsened or became apparent due to the stress of a new dog in the house?
