3 yr old boxer concerns

Question
1. My boxer is 3yr 4 months, within the last 2 weeks she's been assisting her left hind leg. Only while she is standing still. Drinking water or watching me cook. She runs fine and walking fine. Vet says they couldn't feel anything nor had much concern with looking into that day, 1 week ago. She's not whimpering or making any noise either. She will let me grab the leg but seems to pull away if I straighten it. Other leg she lets me move without problem. What could it be? May sister thinks it could've been from a lot of playing rough outside and she stoved it, but should go away with rest and more walking not playing/running around.
2. Should I be giving her milk? (any type) I feel as though she still could use it from time to time, it has calcium and think she's not receiving enough from food. She's a healthy 60 pounds just thought some milk would help her some way.

Answer
Hi Dave,

Boxers often will pull a muscle during their exuberant play. They are also generally stoic, and will ignore pain if there's something they want to do (like play some more!). Restricting activity is a good idea; after a couple of weeks you should see improvement. If not, another vet visit is in order with an x-ray to rule out ligament tears, small fractures, etc. Sometimes buffered aspirin can help with pain and inflammation -- contact your vet for dosage information.

Boxers don't have a dietary need for dairy products, and they can often cause digestive issues. As far as calcium, if you're feeding a kibble it should have an adequate amount. The calcium-phosphorus ratio is important, as well; feeding too much supplemental calcium without an adequate amount of supplemental phosphorus can cause an imbalance. That said, a little bit of milk or other dairy here and there is probably fine, if she enjoys it and doesn't have problems with it.

Best,
