BT/Epilepsy

Question
In February, my BT, now 3yo, had two grand mal seizures, 25 days apart.  He is now on phenobarbital, 32mg, bid, and so far, all is well, and his 30 day blood/liver test came back fine.  A couple of years ago, he suffered a concussion at a boarding facility.  I know that there can be many reasons for epilepsy to occur, but would a concussion be a possible cause?  After much research, my guess is that this is idiopathic epilepsy, but I was wondering if it would be worth it to do a brain scan?

Answer
Hi Cynthia.  I am sorry for the delay in getting back with you - I have been experiencing computer issues.

Head injuries can cause seizures that are similar to the seizures in epilepsy.  I feel that a sonogram is in order, but I would discuss this idea with your regular vet and see if he/she can refer you to a specialist.

Before spending the time/money on a CAT or a Sonogram, I would have a consultation with the specialist to determine is they agree.

Good luck, and please keep me posted.  Sincerely, Penny D.
