Recalling a beagle

Question
Hi Jack, we got ourselves a beagle and he is a great dog, but my husband already wants to get rid of him because we don't have a fenced in back yard for him to go play outside and then come in. We have already invested $300.00 in him and can't spend anymore. For one day he was coming back when we called him, but the next day it all went out the window. Now he's more defiant than ever! I know we need training classes but as I said we aren't going to invest any more money in him esp. if we have no guarantees. I don't know what to do. He also acts like he wants to go outside and play but when we take him out he runs away. This may be the irresponsible thing to do but I just let him run away this time because I can't keep chasing him & all he would do is bark and whine and look out the window while he was in the house. I hope he comes back-he does have tags on. But I'm still in the same situation. Is there a good training that  I can do myself or something relatively cheap on the internet that you recommend. I would love it if I could just keep him inside and let him go outside when he needs to and then just call him back.
Thanks again.

Answer
Hello Stephanie!
Beagles are very curious, and love to look out of windows. Everytime he looks out doesn't probably mean he wants to go out, he is probably watching cars, birds, children,or other dogs. My beagle is a inside dog, and I don't have my yard fenced in, but I do have a solution to it. Purchase a steak pole, or a corkscrew that you can put into the ground, then get the lead that attaches to the steak and to the dog's collar. I think they have everything up to 50 feet. Then he can stay in your yard and it doesn't have to be fenced in. I would recommend supervising him the first couple times you put him on it to make sure everything goes right. I understand it can be hard to fence in a yard, I was going to and it was going to cost me a fortune, so I just got a corkscrew. They are not expensive at all. In fact I got mine at a dollar store and spent around $10.00 for all of it, and  I have now had it for a year, and it still looks brand new. I would also suggest getting him microchipped incase this does ever happen again. They do it at most vets. At the ones where I live it costs about $20.00 to have it done. It is a small chip laser that they put in the dogs skin (doesn't hurt them what so ever) and if it is lost a person can take it to any vet clinic and they will scan it and your information will come up. Also if he is wearing his rabies tag the person can also take him to any Vet. and they can look at the number and return him to your Vet. It is very hard to teach a beagle to stay in your own yard because they are very very curious, and want to see everything. They don't quite understand the boundaries of where the yard begins and ends. There are also other things like electric fenses. That train them for about 6 months where the yard is and when they learn from that you can eventually take the collar off. There are some little things that might help him in this type of situation. When I got mine trained she said at first when you and your dog are inside go to different rooms and carry treats with you and when he comes give him a treat, keep going to different rooms, and then if he runs outside you can all him and he will understand to come because he will be expecting a treat. If you are very serious about it I know you said you didn't want to put anymore money into it, but your dogs life is important to you I know. See a trainer. A trainer can teach him to walk without a leash, and it can come very in handy. Try some of these things out and if you still have trouble don't hesitate to ask me anything else. Good luck and I hope for the best!
