crate training

Question
Presley is in the crate for approx. 4 hours at a time.  I put him in there when i leave for work, and then go home for lunch and let him out.  He is then in there for another 4 hours til i get home.  Our other dog is confined to the living area where Presley is located at.  Also, at night we let Presley sleep with us instead of being crated.  Is this a bad idea for a pup?

Question -
I have an 8 week old male beagle named Presley.  Of course he does the normal puppy things such as chewing, the potty slip ups, etc.  However overall he is doing pretty well.  We also have a Lhaso Opsa that we let roam the house.  During the day I keep Presley crated, and let the other dog roam.  Do you see any problems with keeping one crated and the other free?

Answer -
How long is Presley crated during the day? Dogs are pack animals and of course Presley would rather be with you or your Lhaso Apsa. Presley is not going to like this!
It shouldn't be a problem but, if I was you I would limit the Lhaso Apsa as well. Instead of giving him run of the house I would limit him to a large area (living room, dining room) and keep Presley in that area (crated) as well. I don't think your Lhaso will care much but, it will help Presley out to be closer to your other dog.

Answer
Randy, it sounds like you are a great beagle owner and is taken great care of Presley. The length of time in the crate is good and allowing your other dog to be in the room is a great idea.
As for sleeping in the bed, that should not be a problem. Some people may tell you that if he sleeps with you as a pup it would be hard to get him to stop. That's not true. We had a beagle that slept on his dog bed Monday - Thursday and in our bed Friday - Sunday. He knew what days of the week he was suppose to sleep where. If in the future you do not want him to sleep in the bed you can train him not to.
