Exercising my basset

Question
Hi,  I have an 11 month old basset hound and love her to bits, but have heard that if they run too much it can damage their joints (as they are so heavy).  When I let her off her lead when out walking and she meets other dogs she sprints around trying to keep up with them and play.  Is this harmful to her and should I keep her on the lead so that she only walks?  She really loves meeting and playing with other dogs but they are all faster than her and I'm worried she might damage herself.

Answer
Hi Robyn,

There is a difference between forced exercise and playing.  Forced exercise is anything you control...running, roller-blading, bicycling (with the dog on lead)...which the dog cannot stop on his/her own.

A dog who's playing is able to stop when they're tired.

Exercise is very important for BH's as it keep their back strong.  However, you may want to keep an eye on her until she is physically mature (a couple more months) while she's playing.  Go ahead and let her do it but if she seems to be getting out of control or you notice that she's not slowing down...go ahead and make her rest for a bit.  Especially if she will have forced exercise before and after these meetings.  When she's mature, she should be allowed to play until she tires.  :)

BTW - for piece of mind...this isn't limited to BH's.  Any growing dog should have limited access to forced exercise so as to not damage their joints.
