growling dog

Question
We have a 4 1/2 year old neutered male basset hound who has always been a good dog.  About a week after Thanksgiving we noticed his personality changing.  He now growls at my husband and 9 year old son.  He doesn't growl at me or our 18 year old son.  He will wag his tail come up to my husband or son and when they talk to him nicely he growls and then hides.  He hasn't shown his teeth to them and we want to keep it that way.  This just started out of the blue and my 9 yr old and dog were best friends.  We don't know what to do at this point and don't want to give him away. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Sandy,

Because this came on so suddenly, I would suggest taking him to the vet for a check-up.  Many behavioral changes that come up out of the blue can be a result of pain or illness.

It's hard for me to help with such vague behavioral issues over the internet.  I don't think you're being purposefully misleading, I think there just isn't much description to give.  :)  If the vet gives you the all clear, the best thing you can do is enlist the help of a behaviorist (not an obedience trainer).  A behaviorist will be able to assess the dog in person, speak to you at length and determine the problem.  They can then give you exercises to overcome the problem that are suitable to you, your family and dog.

Good luck to you!
