Question
Nicole,
I have never had a dog. If I ever did get a dog it would be a Basset Hound. I have a small home and already have cats and birds. Is there any way I could get a runt female pup so she won't grow as large? how would go about finding one. Thank you, Dean Orlando

Answer
A true 'runt' would be killed at birth by the dam because it would be unhealthy and therefore a threat to the litter.  Every litter has a largest and smallest...the smallest often being what people call the 'runt'.

There are several small breeds of dog that may suit you.  Pug, French bulldog, Basset, Dachsund, etc.  I'm not sure why you've chosen the BH but you're first step should be to research several breeds, especially since you've never owned a dog.

Size, sex, etc. should be the last decisions you make.  Not all breeds suit all people...some can live in small spaces, some need more exercise, some are more laid back, etc.  Finding the breed that suits your personality, lifestyle and time constraints should be the priority.

Once you've decided on a breed, contact the breed club in your area (or State) and find a reputable breeder.  They will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
