Introducing new pup to 5 year old dog

Question
Hi.  I have a 5 year old basset, Lucy, whom I have raised since she was 8 weeks old.  My daughter just bought me a Basset Pup that is 3 months old.  The puppy is just full of life and wants to play all time.  Since the pup has arrived, one week ago, the 5 year old is afraid and wants nothing to do with her.  She even seems mad.  Lucy was very happy and playful before the pup arrived.  How can I get her past this?  We take great strides not to make over the puppy and we go out of our way to make Lucy the center of attention.  Is it possible that Lucy is just too spoiled?
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Leslie,

It takes all dogs time to get used to a new family member.  You can get her past it by not going out of your way to make her the center of attention.  By fussing over her and coddling her you'll only make her resentful of the puppy.  Treat them both the same...one is no different than the other.  Lucy will get used to it.  :)  In time, she may even put the puppy in her place (which is a good thing).

Read up on "NILF" training (you can find loads of pages if you google).  It's great for the dogs and will, I think, help you to treat them more equally without really trying too hard.  :)
