Question
I just rescued a Basset hound from the pound. I think she is 6-8 yrs old they didn't know. I believe she has a anal problem and wondering if this is common in basset's? She leaks fluid that smells horrible. I have heard through other dog owners that she could need her anal glands drained... Is this common? any ideas?

Answer
Hi Meredith,

All dogs drain their anal glands when they defecate...some have a hard time with this due to age, diet, etc.  They then become impacted and can in turn become infected.

Take her to the vet and have them check.  You can express them yourself at home but should have the vet show you how so that you don't hurt her.

If they've been ignored and are infected it's a matter of hot towels, ointment and anitibiotics.  :)
