Bassets Ears

Question
My 3 year old basset's left ear smells like beef jerky or slim jim's or something.  If she is scratching at it you can smell it from a few feet away.  I am wondering what kind of infection/problem this could be.  It also produces dark brown discharge about twice as quickly as the right.  My husband says it's because she lays on that side a lot.  I saw an add for a "natural remedy" for all kinds of ear infections for your dog but don't want to get "taken".  What do you think it could be?  Do you think that a natural remedy could be tried?  Thanks, Chaney

Answer
Hi Chaney,

It has nothing to do with which side she lays on.  It sounds like a yeast or other type of fungal infection.  If it smells from that far away, it's out of control and she needs to be seen by a vet for a proper diagnosis.

After you've gotten it cleared up, you can start a home ear-cleaning regime using the products you've found.

Good luck!
