QuestionMy son was just given a basset by my neighbor. Fancy is 7 months old and is doing very well. I was just wondering at this age what should her weight be. We feed her and my dog Jyl(beagle, basset mix) twice a day and she seems to be off good weight. I have to watch my dog during the winter months of weight gain (she gets kinda lazy as we all do)so thats why I was wanting to know of the bassets average weight at 7 months to keep and eye on her to make sure she is gaining appropriately as she gets older. I have read some of the Q & A you have answered already quite a few questions already Thank You
AnswerHi Michaelynn,
I'm sorry but I've not experienced a BH puppy at 7 months old, but truthfully, there's no set weight for any dog.
You should be able to see a nice definition underneath Fancy...between her ribs and belly. Most people think a BH is healthy if their belly drags...not so. BH's are prone to back problems as they age and keeping them slim is a good idea. :) If she starts to look like a hot dog/sausage...she's too big.
BH's too, are difficult, weight wise, because they're bone mass is so dense. Where a lab would weigh 30, a BH may weigh 40/45 because of the heavy bones.
