Question
I am the owner of a 4 year old bassett and a 5 year old scottie.  The scottie is great, the bassett, well what can I say, my husband and I are pulling our hair out and on the verge of getting rid of him!
Both dogs are walked daily and played with, although the bassett does not play.  He whines!  It is a constant problem.  It does not matter the activity or time, he whines.  I will ignor it he will whine, I will pet him, he will whine while Im petting!  He will whine for hours.  In addition to the whining he growls anytime he is reprimanded for bad behaviour.  If you raise your voice at him, he starts growling, but wagging his tail.  If you put him in a supmissive position for growling, he just continues to growl.  He hates going out into the fenced yard, so you have to force him.  Then he just cries or barks constantly to be let in.  This results in him reliving himself in the house.  He will attept to steal anything that resembles food.  You can not put a bag, purse or package on the floor as he immediately dives his head in looking for food.  When you pull him away...you guessed it he starts to growl!  Help!!!

Answer
Cindy,
This a problem that I had with my bassett. She actually chewed a hole in the drywall in oue house. She would get upset and go to the area and dig at the wall.

She did want to play with other our dogs, she was protective over anything she thought was hers.

I know it sounds horrible. But I built a kennel outside.
I used a standard fence kennel, I clipped the fence for an opening. I then took stepels[that are used to wiring in a house] and nailed the fence too a wooden dog box, So she could go in the box, plus have an area to run, and eat.
For the winter, I put clear plastic on the outside of the kennel, from the gound up [ to protect from snow.]
I put a wooden roof on top of the kennel, and covered it with a tarp. to protect the wood from rottening quickly.
I put straw/hay which ever you chose. In the box for warmth.
Putting the kennel in a spot that it won't be forgot.
Putting him out side, can help allivate your stress and struggle to keep him inside.
Once these guys are about 4 to 5 years old, as far as my knowledge is they get "old and grumpy". I don't if it is spite of the other dog, or if it is boredom.

Thanks for asking your question,
WIsh I could help more.
