QuestionWe have a soon to be 2 year old male basset we adopted a year ago. We have been using a harness on him for this time. We noticed he was getting chafed unfer the front arm pits about a month ago. We loosened the harness we have and we were fine until tonight. We noticed he had more bad sores and actually one rubbed raw and was bleeding a bit. What kind of harness do you recommend ofr a basset? It is hard to figure out what ones will work with their "Odd" ody shapes.
Thanks for your help.
AnswerHi Brian,
Funnily enough I had the exact same problem! With 2 different harnesses. I replaced my 'regular' harness with a padded type and it didn't help at all. Poor Dudley still got soars.
Truthfully, what I found to work was teaching him to walk nicely on a leash and then using a chain collar. Walking him with a cloth collar, fitted correctly, rubbed his throat wrinkles raw. Urrrh! I don't use the chain collar as a choker...I put the leash clip on BOTH rings so there's no sliding. It's the only thing that I've found, personally, to work for him. He also doesn't wear a collar around the house for the same reason (skin issues) but a bandana with his tag attached.
If your guy isn't walking well on a lead, please do be aware that harnesses make the problem worse as the design is actually to assist in pulling. If he does walk well and you insist on using a harness, here are a couple to look at...
