Question
we have been trying to house train our basset for 2 MOS, we come home from work during the week and he is crated.  yet he still does not go to the door to let us know when he needs to urinate.  Do you have any suggestions, other than treats (he gets one every) and a crate (he has a very lovely crate).  He pees on his bed in the crate, should we take it out and leave him without one?  Any help would be much appreciated we are on the verge on giving up!

Answer
Hi Sonia,

Could you give me a bit more information please?  You've not given me a lot to go on in order to help you.  :)

1.  How old is the dog?
2.  Is he neutered?
3.  How long have you had him (2 months I assume?)
4.  From where did you acquire him?
5.  What have you been doing for 2 months to 'train' him?

What I can tell you, from the information you've provided...

Firstly, change your attitude.  I know that it gets frustrating and hard...and I'm sure you DO want to give up...however, attitude is EVERYthing!!  Your attitude, believe it or not, carries over to your dog.  If you toss your hands up in frustration...so will he (figuratively)...if you stay motivated, positive and patient...so will he!  Bassets are notoriously slow to housetrain, so you're not alone, but after you give me the information I've asked for...dollars to doughnuts there are things you can be doing differently!  :)

Secondly, yes...if he's urinating in his crate, remove any bedding.  Anything soaking up the urine is making it more comfortable and not deterring him.  You also want to be sure the crate is the proper size...he should be able to stand (easy in any crate for a Basset), turn and lie down comfortably but should NOT have enough room for him to urinate in one corner and lay in another.
