training my puppy

Question
I have a 10week old bassett bitch.  I have been trying to train her with puppy pads, newspaper and even bought spray to encourage her to use the paper but she just goes anywhere whenever she needs to.  I put her in her crate at night and she manages to hold until I let her out in the morning.  I have been taking her in the garden and giving lots of praise when she goes outside but it doesn't seem to make a difference to her whether she goes inside or outside.  How can I help her to realize that it is not acceptable and teach her to ask to go outside.  I really don't want to isolate her as she is the most friendliest little thing and loves being in the same room as me.  I've had her now for 3 weeks but no luck.

Answer
Hi Antonette,

What you need to do immediately is pick up the papers.  Unless you live in an apartment and can't take her outside quickly (loads of steps, etc.)...paper training is useless.

From a dog's point of view, this is very confusing.  You are essentially giving her permission to go indoors but then getting angry at her for going indoors.  Most people don't think of this until they're having the exact problem you are.

She needs to be put on lead and walked into the same spot in the garden 10 minutes after she eats or drinks or exercises, immediately after waking up and/or being greeted (should you go out).  Quietly stand and use your phrase, encouraging her to go.  When she has...praise and walk her back in.

Playtime and potty time (outside) should always be separated by about 5 minutes.  If you want her to have a romp in the garden, walk her out FIRST to potty, bring her back in, wait 5 and then let her out off lead.

Any more questions I'll be happy to answer :)
