Question
have two scratching posts which the cat utilizes but still the cat will once in a while scratch the wooden molding.  how do i break the cat of this habit of scratching the wood?

Answer
David,

Cats in the wild's natural scratching post is a tree. Housecats revert to that by using wood because it works better for their claws. I would suggest getting a scratching post with sissel rope (hemp rope) wrapped around it. That is the preferred type of scratching post. Plus I would keep the cat's claws trimmed. I am including a photo link on how to trim them if you don't already:
