Question
I have a male and female that are 12 yrs old.  I have taken my mothers 6 yr old female cat in about 3 months ago.  I had the usual hissing that comes with new cats.  The problem is my male cat is now turning nasty toward the new female cat, exstremly aggressive.  He does do this with the older female cat occ.  My other 12 yr old famle cat is now pulling her hair out from the stress of everything.  I do not know what to do with him anymore.  Any suggetions I would appreciate it.
Thank You,

Answer
Tammy,

It is hard on older cats, especially 12 years old (they are approx 64 years old in human years) when there are changes in the household. They do not deal with stress as well as a young cat. The stress of the new cat can make them ill (as you are seeing in the 12 year old female cat), and change their personality permanently (as you are seeing in the 12 year old male).

It would be hard to do I know, but you should find another home for the the 6 year old. She deserves to be in a happy home and you and your 12 year olds deserve to have a peaceful house.

This is for future information since you have older cats to help understand their needs and the aging process so you can help them live longer:

AND it is important that you take them for an 'elderly cat exam' to check the function of their kidneys, liver, and thryroid. Those are the things that start wearing out first and if you catch it in time if it begins to happen, you can put them on medication to help them. Arthritis, blindness, deafness, and senility hopefully won't be a problem for a long time, but be aware than it can happen at any time the older the cats get.

Best of luck
