Throwing up, etc.

Question
We have a 2-year-old male, indoor, neutered Siamese, who has recently started throwing up quite a bit.  He is a picky eater.  We tried breaking up his food into smaller pieces, and that seemed to help for a few days, but now he is throwing up again.  Today it is clear yellow liquid.

He also recently started urinating in one corner of our house.  He was VERY difficult to litter box train, but has been good about it until now.  So far, if we keep him out of the room, he will go in his box, not another corner.

Are these two things related and what should we do?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi, Kathleen.  It sounds very likely that your kitty is sick, and the two symptoms may be related.  Kidney problems, for one, can cause vomiting and failure to use the litter box.  Even illnesses unrelated to urinary tract issues can cause a cat to eliminate inappropriately.  I urge you to get your kitty to the vet immediately if you haven't already.

If your vet gives you the all-clear, please write back.  There are issues with diet and stress that can cause vomiting and inappropriate elimination, but I don't feel that spending any time on those issues is worthwhile until you're certain the kitty is healthy.
