my cat is having unusual symptoms

Question
I own a cat. It's a female and I have had her for about a year.
Since spring she has been having periods of heat. A couple of weeks in I started noticing yellow spots, all around my appartment, which seems to be uirn. But she picks places like my furniture, kitchen counter, the bed, the tub, and many other. May this be something else beside uirnation?
What are your suggestions on what it is and what to do about it?

Answer
Lili,

Your cat is having very usual symptoms for a female in season.  It is not at all uncommon for females in season to urinate (spray) in various places around the house.  In fact whole females may often be worse in such behavior than the whole males.

The best way to solve this behavior is to have her spayed.  You may have to allow a few weeks after spaying for the hormones to dissipate and the behaviors associated with heats to disappear.

Meanwhile, I would clean up the urine spots with an enzyme based cleaner made specifically for pet odors and pet stains.  These are available from your local pet supermarket or farmer supply store.

I would get her spayed as soon as possible so that this behavior does not become ingrained.  Feliway diffusers in rooms she has been urinating inapproriately might help a little bit, once she is spayed.
