My Cat has a behavior problem

16:12:39

Question
I was given my cat about 1 year ago when she was only 3 months old, she had hardly any contact with humans until i had her, she has had the whole run of the house but she is weeing everywhere, if myself and my husband go out for the evening and we come home late she will ignore us ALL night and if we are late back from work she will sit on the carpet infront of us and she will wee, i have tried to smack her but she just looks at me (if looks could kill i would be dead) and then she wanders off, what should i do as it is tearing my marriage apart. She is my first cat and i've done the best i can to try and do the best for her but i need some advice on what to do to keep her under control. She isn't very active, she'd prefer to sleep on the sofa all day and not move unless she needs to eat but some times she is like this... please help me

Thank you

Answer
Alrighty, it seems like your cat may have just gotten used to going where ever she wants. Time to break the habit!

First of all, I recommend getting Hartz "Stay Off Training Aid" Spray. This stuff is great! It has a smell, only noticeable by cats, that drives them away from areas that you don't want them in. Spray down the areas that she has urinated on before. It is safe for furniture as well. The smell should help keep her away from those areas.

Next, I recommend getting at least two Feliway plug-ins. This product releases a pheromone that makes the cat feel relaxed and happy. That will help reduce the skittish feeling that makes her urinate when and where ever she wants.

You can find both products at Wal-Mart, PetCo, PetsMart, and many smaller pet shops.

Now, for the action plan! Plug in those Feliway plug-ins, and let them do their magic. Then spray down those areas of the house where she thinks she can urinate with the Hartz spray. Next, get a water pistol! Have several, filled with water, in those rooms of the house where she likes to go. When she goes to potty anywhere other than the litter box, give her a snoot full of water, then pick her up and drop her in the cat box.

If she still makes solid waste in the box, but not urine, I suggest getting a separate box for her to urinate in. Some cats absolutely refuse to urinate and defecate in the same area. In order to encourage her to use this new box, place it in an area away from anywhere you sprayed the "Stay Off" but somewhere she is frequently in, and keep it clean at all times.

If you keep up on her, I think this method should start to see some real improvement within a week. However, if it does not, she may have a urinary infection, or she may be untrainable. You should take your cat to the vet, and if she is in good health, I suggest you consider making her an outdoor cat; possibly giving her up for alternate adoption.
