My cat has been acting weird [using carpet as litter box] what should I be looking for in waste product to tell if cat has worms or some other problem?

Answer
Chances are if the behavior started suddenly, there is a problem.  Sometimes there are signs, such as blood in the urine, blood in the stool, diarrhea, roundworms or tapeworm segments, or hard, dry stool.

However, sometimes there is no visible evidence, such as when urinary tract crystals or stones are to blame, or when cramping is causing a cat to defecate outside the box.  Getting him to the vet would be your best move.

Also, if you have switched litters recently, or switched the cleaner you are washing to use the litter box, go back.  Some cats are very particular about certain scents.
