QuestionI have 6 indoor cats, they are all spayed and neutered. One female cat, 4 years old, stopped eating and she has lost a lot of weight, I can feel her back ribs. She seems to be perky, but she cries a lot wanting to go out. We try to feed her canned and people food, she eats a little, but not much.
What do you think it can be the cause of this behavior?
Thanks you, Lola
AnswerHi Lola. It's really very hard to say. A vet is definitely needed here. Just with my experience, I would say kidney failure could be a good possibility, although she's quite young for this. Liver failure, pancreatitis and cancer are other things I have experience with that cause a loss of appetite. There are lots of others, too - painful teeth or gums, parasitic infections, feline leukemia and feline AIDS (those two would only be possible if she's never been tested or has gotten outside at some point). It might even be depression, or high thyroid, which usually causes overeating but can cause a cat to feel so terrible, they stop eating. Perhaps even a bad infection that just needs antibiotics to cure. Lots and lots of possibilities, here, and a vet really needs to see her right away. This will help prevent further complications of her condition.
