Last litter she had no milk

Question

Tina
My cat is just under 2 years old and she had a litter last September. The kittens all died because she did not have enough milk. She had a little but soon dried up completely within 5-6 days. I tried to bottle feed the kittens but in spite of it all, they died. It was a horrible experience but I heard of sometimes this happens in first time cat moms. If she seems to be not producing enough milk again, is there anything I can do? I have her on kitten food with plenty of fresh water. She is due in about a week or so. She has just begun nesting today but there are no other physical signs of impending labor.

Answer
Teri,

About 3 days before the litter is due, you can give her one marshmallow root capsule two times a day.  What we do is to take some meat baby food (strained meat and broth, no other ingredients), and empty one capsule into about a teaspoon of the baby food and mix it up as a "pregnant" treat.  Before you do this make sure she likes the particular flavor of baby food.  Most cats will kill for the stuff, but some just do not like baby food!!!!!  Continue doing this until about 3 days after the kittens are born.  We feed before meals so the queen is very, very hungry!!!!!

It is not common but not all that rare for first time mamas to have problems with milk production, but I cannot remember the malady (after all, I am not a vet).

A good book on hand raising kittens is "Hand-Raising the Orphaned Kitten" by M. L. Papurt, DVM; Barrons Educational Series, Hauppage, NY; 1999.

Good luck & best regards... Norm.
