Question
My cat has recently aquired a upper respiratory infection. I had taken her to the vets and they gave her ceta drops first. Then because she wasn't getting better I took her again and they gave her albon suspension. Then she still was not geiing better so I took her a third time and the vet suggested to give her lysine usually for herpes1 virus in cats, which can cause a weak immune system and upper respiratory symptoms. Two days later I'm still giving her her medicine and I notice a furless bloody spot on the back of her neck. I noticed she has been scratching it till it blisters and gets puffy and the fur is just flying away. I don't know what this is from I'm really concerned, because she has always had a beautiful, black soft, silky coat and her neck looks really bad.

Answer
Hi Vicky,

I don't know why the vet prescribed albon, as this is used to treat protozoan intestinal parasites.  She might have fleas, or she might be experiencing an allergic reaction to one or all of the medications which have already been prescribed.  For this reason, I'd take her to a different vet, and get a second opinion and treatment for her URI, and also have this spot, which seems to be itching her, checked out on her neck.  She'll create an infection in this area, if she doesn't stop scratching there and it does really need to be treated immediately, so I'm glad you've inquired here!  : )

L-lysine IS often prescribed in cats with herpes viruses as it does boost the immune system, but you should find out if her URI is herpes-related.

I hope another vet can successfully diagnose the problems and prescribe the correct medication(s) and that she's feeling better real soon!
