Confused about cats behavior

Question
Good day - I have a question about my mature cat and was wondering if you were able to shed some light on it for me. Bailey - my 13 and 1/2 year old, short haired cat has started peeing on things. This started about a year or 2 ago in the way that , if you left a towel on the floor or put down an area rug, she would eventually pee on it. Usually at night or when we are out. We no longer leave things lying around the floor and my son's hockey bag is always put up so that she doesn't do this. She will also pee on a piece of paper left on the floor or if you leave a cardboard box on it's side on the basement floor, she will pee in it. She also pees in my laundry basket if it is left empty for more than 2 days in an area she can access. We assumed this behavior was due to her litter box being too full for her liking so we empty it more often now. Well the issue has gotten a little bit worse as my 9 year old daughter went into her room the other day and there was cat pee on her bed spread. I am wondering if there is anything that comes to your mind as to why she may be doing this? As I mentioned she is old but as far as I can tell has no "issues" and is not in pain, can see fine and can access her little box with no troubles. She does not appear to be ill so I am a little lost as to why she may be doing this. There have been no sudden changes in the household or anything stressful that she may feel angered towards us. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

You really need to take Bailey to the vet to have her  checked out. Also try changing the type of litter you are using. Older cats seem to like the fine sanded litters better. Even if she can access the litterbox for her to pee outside it means there is something she doesn't like. Is it cleaned everyday? This could be upsetting her. Also try some Feliway. If she is upset about something this should help. If the vet checks out negative and none of these other things work write back and I will help you further to try to retrain her. Good luck.
