Cat urinating on heat vent

Question
My male cat had a urinary tract infection starting in March 2007 with blood in his urine a lot and it stopped in May 2007. He was on antibiotics, but not anymore however he has started peeing on the heat vents lately and in the house. Why is this happening and how do we prevent and/or stop it? He is an indoor cat mostly but goes out ocasionally and is a tan persian if it helps.(He has two litterboxes that are cleaned out daily) Please get back soon. Any advice would be appreciated. We really don't know what to do and we need help fast.

Answer
Hi Helena,

I too have a Persian who gets urinary tract infections easily. It sounds like his infection has come back. And he is associating the litter box with the pain he is having. Get the infection cleared up again. Change his diet. Get a lot of water into him. Add water to his canned food if he eats that. Change him to a high quality, meat based cat food. Grains,(like corn meal), in cat food do not help cats that are prone to UTI.

Change his litter type. He associates the old with the pain. Make sure you clean the vents with an enzyme cat urine cleaner to remove all traces of his odor. Try these things after you get him to the vet and checked out. I do these with my Persian and he doesn't have any more infections. Good luck and let me know what happens.
