Constipation after birthing

16:10:50

Question
A pregnant stray kitten and her momma showed up about 2 months ago and I began to feed them twice daily.  Kitten gave birth at a neighbors yard on Friday.  Found the kittens a couple of days ago.  Brought mom and kittens inside yesterday morning.  Had noticed since Saturday morning that she was not able to have bowel movem't.  Yesterday she ate lots but being indoors I was able to determine that indeed she was having no bowel movement and not urinating either.  I have never seen her drink water even though I always leave some out all day and night.  this morning she is not eating the can food I placed fresh, but she did have access to dry food all night.  Only a couple of drops of blood yesterday.

Answer
Tonie,

This is no surprise.  Many queens are a bit constipated after birthing.  However, this usually clears up within 3-4 days.  I would take the mama to your vet to get her on something to get her a bowels moving.

I would have her checked out thoroughly and maybe check for infection.  If something went wrong and she did not get everything out upon birth, she could have problems with infection in her uterus.  Your vet will probably want to run a blood panel and check out things like kidney function, white blood cell count, potassium, liver function and the like.

Please let me know how she does.

Best regards... Norm.
