Question
Hi my question is for 5, 4 week old kittens that i have been bottle feeding i volenteer at a local cat shelter called communety cat conection in webster, ma where they were taken to, they were found outside in a pile of leaves and trash by 2 boys who also volenteer but the mother was not in sight they are still looking but no sighn yet they figure she was scared off ether when they found the babys or by some other means, i have been watching them for a few weeks now and ive been told by the cat shelter owner now is the time to litter box train them and get them to start eating some more solid food as opposed to the powder kitten formula (i have been mixing in some fancy feast in with the powder formula over the last week as i was told this was a good way to feed them at there particular age) i have tried putting some food on my finger to see if they will lick it off but they dont to keep them from going hungry at 4 hour intervals i feed them bottle formula with some food in it just to keep them from not eating am i better off letting them get hungry enough to where they will eat anything or just not giving up with my current method and hoping they will catch on any advise or help you can give me would be outstanding i have had cats all my life just never this young its not a huge oh my god emergency so if you cant respond back for a few days i will not be worried and also as far as litter box training a few of the kittens move to one side of the box there in to poop and pee so im guessing its just a case of placing a box with litter in with them and they will start to use it im assuming. whenever you get back to me is fine take your time i have a few recources for advise and im sure what will end up working is amix of all the advise i get thank you for your time.

Answer
Well, just keep as your going... open up there mouth a little bit, and put a little bit of the food in their mouth.  It may take a while but after a while theyll get the hold of it sooner or later.  As for the litter box, I always grab them gently and just lightly run their feet through it a few times, put them in the litter box, let them sit in their for a little bit,  and then run their feet through it again... it may take a while for this, just like the transition to food, but it should work, and well good luck.
