Christmas Tree terrors

Question
I have 3 new kittens that are 6 months old, 2 males and 1 female all litter mates.  They are already very energetic and regularly climb my curtains jump on the countertops just to mention a few things.  What I am worried about is putting up my Christmas Tree.  I had a small Christmas tree that I kept in the basement and they have all put tore up most of ornaments as well as taken the bark off.  So any suggestions to keep them un interested in my 10 ft Christmas Tree would be greatly appreciated.  I have had cats all my life and have never had a problem with them bothering the tree, but somehow I don't think I am going to have the same luck with these 3.

Answer
Danielle,

You don't mention whether or not these mischievous youngsters have toys of their own. You may also want to purchase a few scat mats at your local pet store to put around the Christmas tree. A scat mat is a useful tool to keep cats away from things at all times, it delivers a small harmless static electric shock when stepped on. I would also suggest that you keep ornaments out of swatting distance and forgo the tinsel this year....Many cats need surgery around Christmas due to ingesting tinsel, it is very sharp and dangerous to the intestinal tract. I would also suggest investing in a spray bottle or a few to keep around the house, most cats are offended by getting wet. A nice idea that also might work is purchasing clove oil and spritzing it full strength onto and around the Christmas tree, the cats will be offended by the smell and it will make your house smell festive especially if you combine it with cinnamon or nutmeg. You can also try asking your vet what else he/she would suggest to keep your puckish kittens out of trouble...It sounds like you have your hands full with these guys. Good luck.
