5 month old kitten

Question
My wife and I just adopted a 5mo.old male kitten from the local humane society. He had been there about 2 weeks after being brought in with littermates by a family that could not take care of them all. He is a very loving kitten and loves to be near us, most of the time in our laps. We have been putting out wet kitten food and water for him. He eats a little and walks away, doesn't seem interested in the water at all, and I haven't seen him drink any. I have given him some water with a small amount of nonfat dry milk mixed in which he drinks a bit of. He has a bowel movement and three times of urination that I know of in the two days that we have had him. We have a vet visit scheduled in 3 days but I was wondering if this is normal behavior and feeding for a lone kitten in a new home? He is asleep in my lap as I am writing this.

Answer
Hi William,

Cats seem to drink very little. They do not lap up a lot like dogs do. One thing you can do is put about a tablespoon of water in his wet food and mix it up in it. This will give him extra water.

Cats are also very finicky eaters. You might want to change his food around till you find a type he likes. You can also go to a low carb, high protein food. This would be the best for him. Innova, Wellness, Nature's Variety, and EVO are all examples of this type of food.

As long as he is eating and drinking for now don't worry. The vet will be able to check him out to see if there is anything you have to worry about. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
