Question
I've been giving my cat glucosamine for his aches and pains.  He's 15 years old.  He recently decided he didn't want to take it anymore and I think its because the manufactorer changed the taste.  I was buying it at WalMart and he loved it.  I called the vet and they have something with glucosamine but they want a fortune for it.  Can I give my cat aspirin for pain and if so how much?  Do you have any thoughts on flavored glucosamine that my cat might like?  thanks

Answer
Hi Lee!

Honestly, I do not know what glucosamine is, so I cannot help you with that.  I can, however , give you some insight on aspirin.  First, I think it is necessary to consult with your veterinarian before giving your cat any type of over the counter meds.  Most cats can tolerate 1/4 of a buffered adult aspirin for pain, every three days.  You have to be careful, because cats do not have a specific enzyme that is needed to break down this type of drug.  Too much could be a serious health problem, that is why you really need to consult your vet. Be very careful what you give...acetaminophen, such as Tylenol, or ibuprofen, such as Advil, Motrin or Nuprin, in any dosage is deadly to cats.

God Bless,
Becky
