Question
I had a mother cat & 5 babies land on my doorstep about 2 weeks ago. It wound up to be a neighbors cat that put her out when the son left. She is very sweet and loving and great with the babies. They are old enough now to adopt out and I was wondering how mama cat will react and the best way to handle this. I also cannot keep any, due to asthma in the family (they live in the garage now)I worry about mama. I dont want to give her to a place that will put her down. How often can you find someone to take in an adult cat and whats the best steps?

Answer
Hi. Well there is certainly mixed feelings as to how mom will react but the consensus comes out on the side of the wild animal taking over. Unlike humans, the majority of animals offspring leave mom and go off on their own forever. So while she may react slightly, it may be more you impressing your emotions on the situation. But even if she is a bit confused or mopey, you should just give her more attention as this happens. As she bonds to people, she will feel better. As far as adopting out mom, their are many people who prefer a mature cat, especially if she is sweet as you say. Some people had an older cat and want that same personality, some want to save an older cat, some want  a cat they are sure is totally trained and independent unlike a kitten. There are plenty of homes for an older cat. Just take your time interviewing people and get to know them. Don't be afraid to ask questions about them personally. If you feel any misgivings, pass and try someone else. Give it as much time as you can possibly afford. It will work out. And thank you for saving these wonderful animals.
