Question
Hello, I just adopted a new kitten of 3 months old. She is already potty trained in a litter box and eat regularly but there are a couple things i notived about her. She farts a lot and it stinks pretty bad, and when you feel her stomach it sounds like little bubbles in her stomach that are popping. I dont know if she has gas and what not from the food I am feeding her. ( Dry Iams and canned Iams kitten food). Any suggestions?? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Shuree,

If you have just started feeding her the Iams and she was used to something else she may have gotten an upset stomach from it.  There's a couple of things you can do; you can give her goat milk yogurt if you can get it (we get it at "Trader Joe's", I don't know if you have one there or not) which has good bacteria without the lactose found in regular yogurt.  Do not give her cottage cheese at that is another product made from cow's milk and that will upset her stomach more.  I make something I call the "magic mixture" which is a can of chicken or turkey baby food, a dollop of baby sweet potatoes, a dollop of goat milk yogurt and a teaspoon of baby rice cereal or baby oatmeal.  Its bland on their stomach but still palatable and the rice cereal or oatmeal will help firm up her stool if she's having diarrhea.
Now, the other possibility of what is going on is that she may have intestinal parasites (worms) that are causing her problems and this can only be verified by a vet looking at a stool sample under a microscope.  If the "magic mixture" doesn't work (if you can't find the goat milk yogurt don't sweat it, just use the other ingredients) then you may need to take a trip to the vet.
