Moving out with cat

Question

Elskan
I have a 1 year old female calico who is very timid but extremly sweet and very attached to me. Right now we live with my parents who have 3 other cats. All of the cats are very attached to each other. Recently my boyfriend asked me to move in with him. He has a one year old cat as well. What should I do? Should I try to take my cat with me or not? What is worse taking her away from the other cats or me? Please help!

Answer
Colleen,

My inclination would be to leave Elskan where she is.  There is no guarantee she would get along with your boy friend's cat.  If Elskan is ultra-depressed because you have moved out, then you may want to rethink this.  If you are interested, I can give you a protocol for introducing a cat into a household where there is already an established cat.

Currently, Elskan is getting along with your mother's cats and is comfortable where she is.  Cats are often more attached to territory than to people.

So, to repeat, I would leave Elskan where she is and see what happens.

Best regards... Norm.
