Scabs Under My Cats Eyes

Question
I have a 4 year old b/w short hair cat.  He's an outdoor cat who has been pretty skittish ever since he was a kitten, however he's always been snuggly and friendly when approached slowly and with love.  Over the past week, I've noticed he hasn't been coming inside as often.  Only to eat and drink.  Three days ago, I noticed he has two large scabs under both his eyes.  They're similar in size and shape almost like football player marks.  He won't let me near him.  Every time I try to approach him or even call his name, he takes off running.  I haven't noticed any other changes in behavior or appreance aside from this.  Can you please help me figure out what might have happened to him?  I can't catch him to take him to a vet.  Not sure if this helps, but I live behind an alley and discovered 3 baby skunks.  I thought maybe he tried to interact with them and was sprayed.  Maybe he rubbed his eyes raw?  I would think he wouldn't smell too nice and he doesn't seem to smell different.  Please help!  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Stephanie,

I'm not a vet and your description of his scabs is something I have never heard of a cat having so I'm not sure what could have caused it. It may be an allergy, allergic reaction to something, it may be from parasites, or it could have been a freak accident. I would call a vet's office and ask the receiptionist what her opinion is. Tell her you can't catch the cat now and should you be concerned.

It sounds too as if he may have had a traumatic experience of some kind which would explain his behavior.

Cats get along with skunks and yes, the cat WOULD smell if he was sprayed.

Try giving your cat some tasty treat like sardines (in oil) or tuna, something with a strong smell that the cat would go to and put it away from the door. When the cat is involved with eating try to shut the door and keep the cat inside. If you have a large cat carrier, put the treats in there. Do it a couple of times and let the cat be, but the next time try to get close enough to quickly close the cage door. Or you could try giving him treats in the bathroom or small room where you can close him in.

Also try just sitting with the treats near you, but don't try to touch the cat or talk to him. See if he gets close enough start to build his trust up again with you.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help in this situation. I hope he will be okay and back to his normal self soon.
