postpartum weight loss

Question
My cat had a litter of four kittens about 8 weeks ago. She isn't nursing much anymore but she is still losing weight. She is skin and bones. Should I be worried?

Answer
Stacey,

First thing, is, if the kittens are pretty much weaned, you should move them away from her.  She will need to be able to eat on her own without having to compete with her kittens.  Oft times, mamas do not wean their kittens for a long time and all would be better for them to be separated by now.

You might take her to your vet to see if something else may be going on and, if necessary, to get something to stimulate her appetitive (e.g. a vitamin B12 shot).

You need to keep her from getting any more run down.

Please let me know what happens.

Best regards... Norm.
