Question
Hi I have a 3 month old female and a 6 month old British Short Hair kittens. I would like to spay/neuter them before they mature sexually but I would really like the male to NOT lose his muscular build or puffy cheeks. What would be the best time?

Answer
Jet,

At 6 months the male kittens have reached puberty and can be neutered.  They will not develop full stud jowls once neutered, but they still should have puffy cheeks (a characteristic of the breed). The muscular build is there as long as the boy gets exercise and is not overfed. When not fighting the hormones, the boy will tend to not need as much food, so you will really have to watch him so he will stay trim.

At 3 months, if the female weighs at least 4 pounds, she can be spayed, if your vet will do it.  I would wait another month before spaying her, however.

Best regards... Norm.
