Kitten Urine

Question
I brought my kitten home the weekend before Halloween.  He did very well with the litter box, never had an accident.  However, yesterday, he urinated on my step-son's bed.  Is this just a behavorial problem or is it possible that he's sick?  If he's sick, is there a way for me to treat him myself?  In order to take him to the vet I'd have to take time off from work.  I already did this to get him his first shot and I don't think my boss would understand more time off for a kitten at this point.

Answer
Hi Terrie!  Is this a tiny kitten?  How did he get on the bed?  If he was taken onto the bed by your step-son or you or someone else in the house...he may have been afraid to hop off when he needed to visit the litter box, hence him having an accident.
If he is going up and off the bed by himself, he may have marked his territory. A male cat reaches sexual maturity between 4 and 9 months of age. If they are not neutered, they will want to mark their territory by urinating.  Getting him neutered will stop his need to mark his territory.
A urinary track infection is also a possbility.  The urine of a cat that is suffering from a urinary track infection will be brownish in color or bloody.  A simple antibiotic cures this infection.
As long as the kitten is eating, drinking, playing...I wouldn't be concerned of him being sick.  When a cat is sick, they won't eat much and will be very lethargic.
Since he's a kitten, it's too early to mark him as having a behavioral problem.  Keep an eye on him to be sure that he goes in his litter box.  If he continues to urinate outside the box, a vet visit would be beneficial.
I hope this helps!
