Question
Hello,

My dog puppet is very old (over 12) and recently he hasn't
been himself. His two back legs are giving him a hard time
getting around. To lay down he sits first the lets himself fall
to the floor to lay down. Getting up is worse. He doesn't eat
much anymore. I know he is old and this happens. My
question is it going to get worse or is there a solution to
make it easier for him. I rather have him put to sleep then see
him suffering just trying to walk.

Answer
You may be able to improve his quality of life slightly be starting him on Glucosamine and MSM joint supplements...give 500 mg of each twice a day for each 30 pounds of body weight....as well as CHOLINE 40 mg a day and B Complex vitamins.   It sounds as if he would benfefit from a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory to help ease the pain, however, with the poor appetite I would be concerned about some underlying kidney disease.  Therefore, I would advise that you consult your veterinarian for some blood testing prior to using any pain medication.  Also, your veterinarian upon physical examination of Puppet can give you a better idea of his prognosis.
