hair loss problem

I have a 9 year old Husky who has recently begun to loose his fur. First it was on his belly now a spot on his side. He scratches it and the fur falls out in clumps. He has not scratched it raw but is loosing fur all the time. The vet has said she doesn't know what it is and gave him a shot of steroid to stop the itch! Is this a dermatology problem? Any possible solution? Thanks

If the steroid shot helps for a few days or a week and then the itching comes back, it is probably an allergy.  In that case oral steroid tablets can help keep the itching minimized.  If there is an infection, that also needs treatment to stop the itching.
