Cat pooping on carpet

Question
Dr. We have 6, seven month cats. Use to have 7 but last week one got hit by a car. His brother started pooping on our floors in all different rooms since the other died. He was castrated about 2 weeks ago. He always used a box before now. Does either one of these situations contribute to this change. Otherwise he seems to be alright.

Answer
Both of these things could be causing this but it's more likely the neutering has caused some residual pain that is making it hard for him to squat in the box.

I doubt if this is just behavioral. Normally they will mope around when a sibling/buddy is gone but litter box issues are normally caused by pain, over crowding (too many cats using the same box) stress, or illness.

The first thing that you can do is get more boxes and fresh clean litter and try that. Otherwise, he should go in to see the vet if it doesn't stop.

That way any pain or illness issues can be caught and remedied.

6 cats in one household can be very stressful for all cats concerned, so you may want to assess that part of the equation as well, but I would start with a trip to the vets to make sure he is okay.
