Micro Chip ID

Question
I like to micro chip my dog for ID purposes.
I heard that there are ISO micro chips and non ISO micro chips available. Is there a preference for either one of them?
What are the general cost involved for chipping my dog?
After chipping how and where is my dog registred and where/how do I report when my dog is lost?

Answer
Right now AVID has the market share for microchipping.  They are in litigation with the company who makes the ISO chip because they don't want a universal microchip to be sold because that would lessen their profits!  The ISO chips are used world-wide and many foreign countries require them for traveling pets but only here is US we use the non-ISO chips.

Average cost is about $30-35 for the actual microchipping, then you must send a registration into the company and the registration costs $15 or so dollars.

If your dog is lost or stolen, you contact the local shelters, police department and call the microchip company.
