dog nail clipping question

Question
Jana: I need to have my dogs (long-hair chihuahua) nails clipped but they are long and want to do them under anesthesia. My question is: If clipped very short, while under anesthesia, and assuming the quick was nipped will there be any pain when my pet wakes up?? Or does the pain only come at the moment of the cut. What I mean is: my dog will wake up a few minutes later - will there be lingering pain?

Answer
Well, there will be some soreness but I wouldn't call it pain like it would be if the dog was awake.
You need to make sure they don't step in dirt of dog manure and things for a day or so to give the nails time to seal off.
Then make sure they are clipped every 5-6 weeks after this and you won't have this problem.
Ask the vet to show you how to do it at home (if the dogs will let you) and that will save you time and the expense of taking them in which tends to keep clients from getting it done on time.
