We have a black lab, 5 years old, very healthy, this morning was pacing, couldn't get comfortable laying down and won't wag his tail. It hurts him when we lift his tail, and his bottom hole is a little red and swollen. He has eaten and drank lots of water today, pottied but don't know for sure if he has pooped

Answer
Could be that his anal glands are bothering him a lot. This happens now and then to even large dogs. He may have been scooting on the floor or the grass-hence the red, raw rectum. That or he has diarrhea and that is why it is red.

You might want to call the vet tomorrow if it still looks the same way. He can express his anal glands and make him much more comfortable.

He may also have gotten a sticker in there- they do that too!
Either way he should see the vet.
