Siberian Husky Nose Issues

Question

Zephyr's Nose
Hello.  We have two Siberian Huskies who are litter mates, Ace and Zephyr.  They are a little over 3 years old.  However only one has been showing this problem.

I'll jump right to the problem and then follow up with some background.  Zephyr has developed some lesions on his nose.  The skin is drying up and peeling off the area just behind his nose is also turning pink in color.

Now a little history.  I took them to a dog park and later found out there was a storm drain run off that comes into the park.  After a great deal of running I found both Ace and Zephyr drinking out of it.  I immediately got them out of there, but not after they had both shoved there muzzles into it.  A few days later Zephyr starting showing the symptoms above.  Zephyr prior to this event would also sneeze a lot, 3-5 times in a single episode.  I did some on-line searching and I came up with auto immune diseases based on the photos of other dog's noses.  We took him into the vet and they thought it may be that as well and they gave us a prescription of Simplicef 200mg, 1 a day for 14 days, just to see if it would turn around.  However I am not quite sure.  I read about some holistic vet recommendations and switched our dog's dry food out (which we have had them on for over a year) for a home made mixture of rice, beef, and misc. vegetables.  I also started giving Zephyr two tablets of homopathic sulfur 30X twice a day and two tablets of Arum Triphyllum 30X four times a day as well as the Simplicef.  In addition I put bag balm on Zephyr's nose 1-2 times a day rubbing it in as much as I can before he starts lick it off. Now for the results.

Zephyr's nose will heal up forming scabs over it and it looks really good.  However not 2 days after this occurs (it has happened twice now) Zephyr will rub his nose on the carpet or grass outside, which tears the scabs off his nose causing the lesions to bleed again.  What is your opinion?  Do you believe this to be an immune disease or is it possibly a parasite infection or an allergy?  I personally am thinking it's a parasite or allergy, which is why I am asking your advice.  I've attached a picture of his nose to show you what I am talking about.  Thanks a great deal for your time and opinions.

Answer
Simplicef is an antibiotic and will only help a bacterial infection,  It will do nothing for any type of autoimmune disease.  Without a biopsy being done to see if it is one of the autoimmune diseases (either pemphigus or discoid lupus) it is hard to tell you exactly what to do. Both will respond to steroids.  We use a combination of tetracycline and niacinamide for discoid lupus long term. The depigmentation in the photo makes me think of discoid lupus.

If it does not heal, then have it biopsied.
