Question
My dogs right eye looks like it is turning upward and i can see a pink flap of skin over the eyeball near the tearduck. what could the problem be? when she looks at me she looks like she is looking up with the right eye only??Please Help. She seems ok, eating and drinking walking etc.

Answer
Probably your dog has developed a "cherry eye", called that because it looks like a tiny cherry in the corner of the eye nearest the nose. Other possibilities include inflammation, a tear, or injury to the conjunctiva, or possibly a tumor.

The conventional treatment of the cherry eye (an inflammation of the gland) is surgery or a tacking procedure.

Holistically, acupuncture, homeopathy and herbs may help this condition (if it is cherry eye), so I would suggest seeking integrative veterinary care. There are many in Florida since the Chi Institute trains veterinarians in Gainsville.

FIND A HEALER
I strongly recommend finding an integrative veterinarian with whom to work. This is a person trained in many different approaches, including using conventional drugs only when absolutely needed. Working with one can increase the chance that your cherished companion can live a long and healthy life after recovering from this current problem. There are good ones and great ones, and a few homeopathic veterinarians will consult by phone or email. Read my comments at the end on working with and selecting a holistic veterinarian.
You can go to the web sites for each type of holistic practice and use their referral list to find one near to you:
1. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine: www.IVAS.org & www.TCVM.com
2. Homeopathic veterinarians (these can often help you by phone if no other holistic practitioners are nearby that you like): www.theAVH.org and www.DrPitcairn.com.
3. Chiropractor - www.animalchiropractic.org
4. Wide range of other treatments: www.AHVMA.org, American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
