Arthritis Question?

Question
Howdy:
I have a seven year old Golden that is showing early signs of arthritis in his rear hips. Is there an over the counter drug that will help get him going in the morning safely?
Get him out playing and running and he seems to be okay....its only after he has been laying around for a long period that he seems slow to get up and moving.
I know its not a serious problem right now but if I can ease his stiffness I want to.
Any advise is appreciated and if I need to take him to a local vet for prescription meds I will.
If something over the counter will do the trick I'll do that first due to vet cost and prescriptions.
                Thanks......Hugh

Answer
Hi Hugh!

You can try a product called Cosequin. Its a neutraceutical made for arthritis for dogs and cats and can be found OTC. You can also get this via catalogs such as drsfostersmith.com

You should get xrays done on his hips to see if he has hip dysplaysia. Many goldens have this. Your vet can also RX and NSAID that is safe for dogs and will make him more comfortable.

Hope this helps!
