Sick Puppy Shedding

Question
I am a first time dog owner. I just bought little shakespeare two weeks ago. He became lethargic and refused to eat two days into his stay. I began force feeding him by syringe and took him to the vet immediately. The vet put him on antibiotics but two days later my puppy's condition worsened and his kennel cough put me in a panic. He spent one night at the hospital where he recieved nebulization and injected antibiotics. Since then he is doing much better however he began shedding excessively around the time that he became very sick and has not stopped. He is a purebred lhasa and did not shed the first few days. We were told these were non shedding dogs. Now the vet says that it should stop soon but his coat is getting thin and there are clumps of hair everywhere. I am very concerned for both of us because I am having respiratory problems due to the excessive hair although I dust and mop everyday. I love this little guy and do not wish this problem to escalate. In addition I fear that the shedding might be indicative of a more serious problem. Can you please shed some light on this situation?
I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you so much
Barbara

Answer
A Lhasa pupp can shed some of its puppy hair, but in general they don't shed.  Anytime a dog gets sick, it affects the growth of the hair in the hair follicle.  Sometimes the hair changes color and sometimes it falls out.  If the pup is back to normal now, it will take time for the hair to grow back.  If it continues to lose hair, the vet may need to do a biopsy to see just why a non-shedding dog is shedding.
